We rely on digital infrastructure every single day.
From streaming content and financial transactions to healthcare systems and emergency services, data centers quietly power the systems that keep our world connected. And as demand for digital services continues to accelerate, driven by cloud computing, artificial intelligence and real-time connectivity, the infrastructure behind it must scale just as quickly.
But the goal isn’t just growth alone. This year’s Earth Day theme of “Our Power, Our Planet” serves as a reminder to reflect on how that growth should happen, and the role data centers play in supporting a more sustainable digital future.
Designing for Efficiency from the Start
Sustainable growth begins with how infrastructure is designed.
Interconnection data centers play an important role in improving overall efficiency across the digital ecosystem. By bringing multiple customers into a single, high-performance environment, interconnection data centers reduce the need for smaller, less efficient facilities. This shared model allows for more efficient use of power, cooling and space, lowering energy use and emissions per workload.
At Cologix, that approach is built into how our facilities are developed and operated. From energy-efficient building design to advanced cooling systems and thoughtful site planning, sustainability is considered from the earliest stages.
Because when infrastructure is designed with efficiency in mind, the benefits scale alongside the demand.
Improving Performance Through Operations
Design is only part of the equation. Day-to-day operations are where we realize efficiencies as well.
Across our footprint, Cologix continues to improve operational performance through targeted upgrades, smarter energy management and continuous monitoring. These efforts help ensure that our facilities operate as efficiently as possible while maintaining the reliability our customers need.
Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), one of the industry’s key efficiency metrics, remains a central focus. Cologix’s average PUE continues to outperform global industry benchmarks, reflecting the strength of our operational practices.
At the same time, teams are implementing advanced cooling strategies, including free-air cooling, real-time airflow controls and liquid-based systems. These technologies help to reduce our energy consumption while supporting today’s high-density workloads.
Powering Infrastructure More Responsibly
Energy is the foundation of digital infrastructure, as well as one of the most vital areas for true impact.
As part of our ESG strategy, Cologix continues to expand access to renewable and carbon-free energy across our platform. In some markets, including Montréal, facilities benefit from access to hydroelectric power, while in other regions, our flexible procurement strategies help expand access to lower-carbon energy sources.
As demand for digital services increases, sustainable energy sourcing plays an important role in helping our customers align their infrastructure decisions with their sustainability priorities.
Managing Resources with Intention
Sustainable operations extend beyond energy. Water, materials and waste are all part of the equation, and each requires thoughtful management.
Cologix prioritizes closed-loop cooling systems that reuse water within facilities, significantly reducing overall consumption compared to traditional methods. These systems support efficient cooling while limiting reliance on external water resources.
At the same time, our teams continue to improve material efficiency through recycling programs, responsible sourcing and ongoing efforts to better track and manage waste streams. These practices reflect a broader approach: focusing on how our resources are used every day, not just during design or construction.
Growing Responsibly
The role of data centers in the global economy will only continue to grow.
As industries digitize, as AI expands and as connectivity becomes more deeply embedded in daily life, the demand for digital infrastructure will increase. Meeting that demand requires continued investment, innovation and expansion.
But it also requires responsibility. For Cologix, this means building infrastructure that enables digital growth while remaining accountable to the communities, resources and ecosystems that support us.
Because sustainable digital growth isn’t about slowing progress. It’s about making sure that progress is built to last.
A Moment to Reflect
Earth Day is a reminder that sustainability is both a global challenge and a shared responsibility. For companies, it’s about how we design, build and operate. For individuals, it’s about the choices we make every day.
As we look ahead, the mission is clear: To build infrastructure that supports connection, innovation and a more sustainable future. Because our power — and how we use it — shapes the future of our planet.
