Cologix’s journey to become the largest colocation provider in Columbus

Share

A decade ago, Cologix recognized Columbus as a key technology hub for businesses and we entered the market to meet the rising demand for colocation services.  As a driving force for ecosystem connectivity and digital business expansion, Cologix has now become the largest interconnection and colocation provider for growing companies in the area.

Cologix Data Centers Drive Growth in Columbus

In 2014, we acquired an existing data center provider and opened COL1, our first data center in the region. Positioned within the golden triangle of Washington DC, New York and Chicago, COL1 gave companies critical access and connectivity to these top markets.

To meet the increased need for network-neutral connectivity and interconnection solutions, we also opened our enterprise-grade data center COL2 that same year, which provides direct access to major cloud providers. We continued our growth trajectory with the debut of COL3 in 2018, our Scalelogixsm data center, built to meet enterprise and large company demands for critical power and robust, scalable, infrastructure to support a wide range of companies’ digital applications.

This month, we became the first colocation provider to complete an AI-ready data center in the region with the opening of our COL4 Scalelogixsm facility — our fourth and most comprehensive data center in Columbus. COL4 strongly positions us to support the surge in AI applications from businesses requiring seamless integration with cloud services. With the debut of COL4, our portfolio of Columbus data centers spans a total of 500K square feet and 80MW of power.  We continue to innovate and evolve to be ready for whatever our customers’ digital business demands.

Let’s take a look at how Columbus is paving the way for even greater digital business opportunities.

A Nexus of Connectivity in the Heartland

Columbus continues to accelerate its role as a hotbed for technology in the Midwest. Significant carrier network traffic connects through Columbus, as it is one of the easternmost metros in the Midwest, acting as a gateway between the Midwest and the East Coast.  Many organizations want a presence in Columbus because it facilitates connectivity to major metros like Ashburn and Chicago. Often, routing through Columbus is also more cost-effective than routing through a city like Chicago.  In fact, Columbus is home to the highest metro concentration of Fortune 1000 companies.

From companies like Intel, with its large campus in Columbus, to the breadth of hyperscalers like AWS and Google opting to house onramps there, it is a critical location for infrastructure. Both businesses and local governments have made a conscious effort to bring technology companies to the area, and the acceleration of company expansions has significantly increased there over the past five years.

Ohio State and other leading educational institutions are also located in or near the city, adding to the reasons Columbus is a tech magnet in the nation’s heartland. Another thing that makes Columbus so attractive: 50% of the U.S. population lives within 500 miles of it, so it’s easy to reach.

Why Choose Cologix in Columbus?

For organizations looking to scale their footprint or establish a presence in Columbus, Cologix’s data centers offer unique advantages for strategic colocation and interconnection services.

With over 50 carriers housed in our data centers, we are a Meet-Me-Room destination in the state of Ohio and we ensure diverse connectivity options for all customers. All four of our data centers are interconnected with a fiber ring accessing Amazon Web Services® Direct Connect and Google Cloud Interconnect public cloud onramps.  Our data centers are also home to the Ohio IX (internet exchange), where service providers, content delivery networks and enterprises like finance, healthcare, retail, insurance and technology companies come together to exchange data for optimized network performance and reliability.

Within our most recently opened data center, COL4 offers these benefits and sustainable features:

  • Ultra-low latency: Sub-1 millisecond latency for latency-sensitive applications
  • Capacity: 50MW of capacity across three data halls for high-density workloads
  • Size: 256K SQFT across a seven-acre campus
